OVERVIEW
Central College is located in the Pella, IA, that features 6 outdoor tennis courts. Central also features a newly renovated 5 court indoor facility for use during inclement weather making it an ideal location for an adidas Tennis Camp.
Camp is open to all ages and ability levels. We assess each camper’s ability during the first session of camp and make sure they are grouped according to their age and abilities so this way we can tailor the drills, games, and match-play to fit their individual needs.
Camp Director
Ryun Ferrell has been the Central head men’s and women’s tennis coach since 2014.
Over his nine seasons, the two programs have combined for eight top-three American Rivers Conference finishes, including a second-place effort from the women in 2021. His teams have made the league tournament semifinals 16 times in 16 appearances. The men have a .708 winning percentage in league matches and the women have a .583 mark.
Dutch women’s tennis players have earned a total of 24 all-conference honors under his tutelage, while the men’s players have acquired 18 honors. The two programs have won a combined 12 bracket titles at the American Rivers Conference Individual Championships under Ferrell. In 2022, Ashlynn Brant won the women’s C-Flight singles doubles crown and Nick Scott/Caleb Hamerlinck won the men’s B-Flight Doubles title.
Prior to coming to Central, Ferrell spent 16 years as a head coach for Division I women’s programs. He was at Northern Illinois University from 2006-14 after guiding Drake University from 1999-2006. He won at least a share of two Missouri Valley Conference titles at Drake and helped seven players earn all-league recognition during his tenure.
Entering the 2020 fall season, Ferrell ranked 30th among active NCAA Division III women’s tennis coaches in career victories with a combined overall women’s mark of 206-123 (.626).
Ferrell spent the first four years of his coaching career as an assistant women’s coach at the University of Kansas, assistant men’s and women’s coach at The College of New Jersey and assistant women’s coach at Wichita State University, capturing at least one conference title at each program.
A veteran teaching professional, Ferrell also has club instructor experience. He worked in junior development at the Princeton (N.J.) Racquet Club and Wichita (Kan.) Racquet Club. He also taught at Des Moines Golf and Country Club and the Wakonda Club in Des Moines.
Also an experienced camp clinician, Ferrell has directed or assisted summer tennis camps at Central, Northern Illinois University, University of Notre Dame, the Ohio State University and the University of Kansas.
A graduate of Baker University (Kan.), Ferrell was a scholarship member of the Wildcat tennis team. His team made two appearances in the NAIA national tournament (1993, 94) in his four years with the program.
What to Expect
At adidas Tennis Camps you’ll receive individualized tennis training through a superior curriculum regardless your age or ability level. We want young tennis players to improve in every aspect of their game; our camps put a focus on individual skill development while incorporating drills and matches to emphasize teamwork & fun!
Features of our tennis staff include: Low camper-to-coach ratios; Groups based off of age & ability level; Fun, energetic, & experienced staff.
Supervision: The staff supervises campers for the entire duration of the camp. For overnight tennis camps, the staff will reside in the dormitories with the campers, providing supervision. Campers are expected to show respect towards other campers and the host facility. Drugs, alcohol and tobacco products are strictly forbidden, and will result in immediate dismissal from camp without refund.

TENNIS CAMP CURRICULM
Individual Skill Training
- Forehand and backhand – Hands-on instruction daily on how to improve on the two make strokes in tennis
Technical Skills Training
- Lobs and Top Spin – Practice and develop additional strokes you can use in matches
- Drop-Shots – Work on the proper way to hit a drop shot to add to your game!
- Serves – How to serve with confidence as well as work on all types of serves
- Grip – Proper technique to optimize your game
Tactical Skill Training
- Court Movements – Strategies and Practice of where to be on the court and when
- Decision-making skills to solve problems at the correct time
Game-Based Learning
- Rules & Scoring – Instructional Teaching
CHECK IN & CHECK OUT
Overnight Campers: Check in Monday from 1pm-2pm at dorm TBA. Check out Friday 4pm at the courts.
Day Campers: Check in Monday from 1pm-2pm at dorm TBA. After the first day, drop off each morning at 9am at the tennis courts. Check out Friday 4pm at the courts.
Make sure campers bring all necessary tennis equipment, a refillable water bottle, & snack. (See Below)

What to Bring to Camp
Below is a suggested list of items to bring to camp. We suggest that campers do not bring expensive personal items such as cell phones or laptops. Campers are allowed to bring cell phones to camp to contact their guardians, but they are not allowed on the field during training sessions. Please label every article you bring to camp. All personal items are the responsibility of each camper. adidas Tennis Camps and its camp staff are not responsible for lost, stolen, or forgotten items.
